After winning 10 games during their dream 2016 season, which included a Pac-12 North title, Colorado has won just 10 total games the past two seasons while going just 8-16 against the spread.

Outspent and overmatched in this conference, Colorado is only going to be able to compete at the top of the Pac-12 once every blue moon. And with new head coach Mel Tucker taking over, I think it is going to be a long time before we see the Buffaloes near the top of the standings.

Tucker has spent the last three years as the defensive coordinator at Georgia. I'm going to chalk most of his success there up to the fact that A) the Bulldogs defense has been stocked with NFL prospects and B) the SEC has been a comically bad offensive league the past three years. This is Tucker's first head coaching job at any level and comes after two decades of consistent failures at the NFL level.

Needless, to say, I'm not optimistic about the Tucker Era.

Tucker will have a chance to earn some goodwill in a season-opening game against rival Colorado State in Denver. Colorado has dominated this series over the last four years, going 4-0 straight up and ATS and winning by an average of over 21 points per game.

Now for the bad news: there's a chance that Colorado might not win another game after that. Nonconference home games against Nebraska and Air Force are not going to be easy. The Buffs also start with three of four Pac-12 games on the road, and they have October home games against Arizona and USC.

Add in November trips to UCLA and Utah, and home games against Top 25 foes Stanford and Washington, and things could get ugly for this group.

If you kick out Colorado's wild 2016 season, they are just 13-66 SU in league play over the last decade, never winning more than two Pac-12 games in a season.

I want nothing to do with a Mel Tucker-coached team. I was very familiar with his work in the NFL and it was always atrocious. I don't know what Tucker has planned for this program, but I can almost guarantee that three years from now I'll be writing about how the Buffs' new head coach is going to try to turn things around.
