At this point we should just pencil the Eagles in at 7-6 and call it a day, right?
Steve Addazio has gotten Boston College to seven wins five times in the last six years. Last season they had a chance to break through to that eight-win plateau but had to watch as their First Responder Bowl matchup with Boise State was unceremoniously cancelled.
Addazio will pin this year's hope around junior quarterback Anthony Brown and junior running back (and two-time first team all-ACC performer) A.J. Dillon. They are two of five three-year starters on an offense that was the best of the Addazio regime last year, averaging 32 points per game. This season they brought in a new coordinator and are looking to open things up even more.
Surprisingly, last year the offense actually carried the team. After routinely fielding one of the ACC's best defensive units, the Eagles dropped to just seventh in the league last season. Addazio will have to work his magic this season, as just three starters and only four of his top 12 tacklers are back.
This is traditionally one of the most physical teams in the ACC. They lost a ton on both the offensive and defensive lines, though, and could end up starting three redshirt freshmen in the trenches.
Fans of this program have really started grumbling about where they are and where they are headed. Boston College kind of defines mediocrity. They are only occasionally competitive against the top-tier teams in the ACC, and their ground-and-pound style isn't exactly fun to watch.
Fortunately, this young team will start the season with four of their first five games at home. The lone road game is against a feeble Rutgers program. If the Eagles can take out Kansas and Wake Forest in Chestnut Hill, then B.C. actually has a good chance of starting the season 4-1 or 5-0.
Things stiffen up after that, though. And their closing month is as difficult as anything in the nation. Four of their final five games are on the road, with trips to Clemson, Syracuse, Notre Dame and Pittsburgh. The lone home game is against Florida State.
If Brown makes some leaps as a passer, if Dillon puts together another all-league season, and if the youngsters on defense step forward, then I could possibly find six wins on this schedule. But they aren't going to make it to seven wins this year. And I don't be surprised if Addazio gets the boot following a five-game losing streak to close the season. Play the 'under'.
