It feels like now or never for Dana Holgorsen and the Mountaineers.
West Virginia has been close but has not been able to break through under Holgorsen's watch. Sure, they rolled up 10 wins and a decent bowl game in 2015. But the Mountaineers have yet to be a factor at the top of the Big 12 race since joining the league in 2012. It seems like every year there are one or two missing pieces; either the defense is shaky or the offensive line is young or the receivers are shoddy or the quarterback is inexperienced. And every year Holgorsen seems to find himself on a list of coaches on the hot seat.
But things might be lining up for West Virginia. Will Grier is back to trigger a Mountaineers offense that averaged 34.5 points per game last fall. The defense has more depth and experience than last year's unit. And there is somewhat of a power vacuum at the top of the league this year. Which means that if the Mountaineers can cash in a few road wins then they have a chance for their first Big 12 title game appearance.
It all starts with Grier, who threw for 3,500 yards and 34 touchdowns last season. Grier, a fifth-year senior and Florida transfer, will be working behind a veteran offensive line and throwing to a pair of absolute stud receivers in Gary Jennings and David Sills. That pair of wideouts combined for 157 catches, 2,174 yards and 19 touchdowns, and they could be even better this go-round.
Morgantown is one of the most unique atmospheres in college football and can be one of the toughest places in the country for an opponent to get a win. WVU is 16-4 straight up at home over the last three years, and they have two potentially season-defining home games this November against TCU and Oklahoma.
However, West Virginia's ceiling will be determined by how they play on the road. Games at N.C. State, Texas Tech and Iowa State are tough but all winnable. And if WVU can pick up those victories they will easily surpass this season win total and put themselves in position to play in the Big 12 title game.
Tom Herman is rebuilding the Texas powerhouse. But he's not there yet. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and TCU all lost their starting quarterbacks as well as a boatload of talent. The time for WVU to make a move is now. I don't know if I trust the Mountaineers defense to keep things together enough to get the Mountaineers a title. But I do think that this offense has enough firepower to shoot this group to eight or nine wins. I'll play the 'over'.
