2018 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
Chip Kelly is back in college football. In a major surprise, Kelly was hired last November to take over for career loser Jim Mora. The irony of this is that if Kelly had simply waited a couple months he could have slid back in at Oregon, the school at which he built his career.
But Kelly will try to pick up the pieces and add some sizzle to Los Angeles' "other" college team. And he'll do so while trying to replace Top 10 draft pick Josh Rosen at quarterback. Rosen was good enough to mask most of the issues that the Bruins have had the last two years. But now that he's gone and that Kelly is going to ramp up the offensive tempo to 11, this team is going to be exposed.
UCLA isn't without talent. On either side of the ball. But it is going to take some time for them to adapt to Kelly's schemes, systems and breakneck pace. Offensively the line is being completely rebuilt and will have to maintain its stamina. Kelly will have a healthy stable of running backs. But the receiving corps is lackluster and devoid of difference makers.
Then there is the question of quarterback. Kelly was able to coax Michigan castoff Wilton Speight to come to UCLA and compete against freshman Dorian Thompson-Robinson, a Top 10 recruit.
The Bruins were comically bad on defense last year. The numbers - No. 116 in points allowed, No. 129 against the rush and No. 122 in total defense - actually don't do justice to how weak this group was. And I don't see how they will be any better this time around. They lost their three best players, including leader Kenny Young. And Kelly's offense will put them on the field even more this season.
UCLA does not have a kind opening month. They host a floundering Cincinnati team. But the Bruins are still going to be adjusting to their new system. UCLA then has to travel to Oklahoma for a beating before taking on a very good Fresno State team.
The Pac-12 schedule doesn't get any easier. They drew Washington and Oregon out of the North. And perhaps their three most winnable games - Colorado, Cal and Arizona State - all come on the road. They close the season with back-to-back home games against USC and Stanford.
This season is about laying track for Kelly. I don't doubt that he will get the Bruins going. Eventually. But these aren't his players. And these guys aren't familiar with his style. The good news, though, is that they have only four seniors starters. That means that the lumps they take this year should pay off down the road. But in the meantime, play UCLA 'under'.
