2018 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
Tulane came up one tantalizing inch short of a bowl game last year. The Green Wave haven't made the postseason since 2013 and have played in just one bowl game since 2002. Willie Fritz has this team pointing in the right direction, and last year's close call should serve as the perfect motivator for this year's group.
Fritz is a proven winner. He worked wonders in just two years at Georgia Southern, and now he's doing the same thing down in New Orleans. His option attack is hard to guard, and Fritz has a load of weapons to utilize in the ground game this year as the Wave try to take the next step.
It starts with quarterback Jon Banks, the team's leading returning rusher. He'll team up with thumper Darius Bradwell and speedster Corey Dauphine to give the Wave a variety in the option attack. Tulane has four starters back on the offensive line, which is crucial to running a good option, and I expect them to build on last yea's No. 20-ranked running game.
Tulane also has its top five receivers back, so look for a little bit more punch in the passing game as well.
The problem is going to be on defense. Tulane wasn't very good last year, and they have just four starters back on that side of the ball. They lost their best corner, Parry Nickerson, and have just five of their top 12 tacklers back this year. This team has to find stops and/or turnovers somewhere or else they are going to be in a lot of trouble.
Tulane should be amped up for its home opener against ACC foe Wake Forest. And they should bag an easy W against Nicholls State in Week 2. But five of Tulane's next seven games are on the road, including a trip to Ohio State on Sept. 22.
I love Fritz. And I think that Tulane is going to be a handful offensively. But their defense has the potential to be really, really bad. I can see them beating Nicholls State and taking out SMU and East Carolina, both of whom come to New Orleans. I even think they are better than Tulsa, whom they play on the road. But they still need two wins to go bowling. At UAB? At Cincinnati? Navy? I won't be surprised if Fritz pulls off an upset somewhere along the line. But I still think that this team is a year or two away from making some noise in the AAC.
