2018 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
This program is a total mess. Gary Anderson turned out to be a dreadful hire, and the Beavers have moved on to Jonathan Smith, a guy in his first head coaching job. Smith will be tasked with rebuilding a roster that is completely bereft of talent. And the fact that Oregon State's season win total is so pathetically low shows just how bad this team is right now.
Oregon State should've been much more competitive last year. Instead they barely won one game - a three-point win as a 26-point favorite against an FCS opponent - and they were outscored by 22.9 points per game in Pac-12 play. Somehow this pile of dung even went 3-9 against the spread despite routinely benefitting from three- and four-touchdown lines.
I suppose there is nowhere to go put up. But it will take a while to get there. Senior Jake Luton is projected as the starter. But he was a junior college transfer that didn't flash any potential in limited action last year. They lost their best offensive player, Ryan Nall. And while they do have four offensive line starters back, that quartet helped make up one of the worst lines in the country last season.
Things aren't any better on defense. The Beavers were No. 127 in the country in scoring defense last year, giving up 43 points per game. They were equally bad against the run (235.8 yards per game) and the pass (237.3), and their front seven is simply too small and weak to hold up against Pac-12 offenses.
Oregon State gets to open the year at Ohio State in what should be a bloodbath. The home opener is against Southern Utah. But after watching the Beavers play against FCS teams the last five years (0-5 ATS), that one is not even a sure thing. A road trip to Nevada to close out the nonconference portion of the schedule is the only other game where a win wouldn't be a massive upset.
This team should be much better ATS this season. But Oregon State will likely be an underdog in all nine conference games this year. And I can't see them winning more than one league game this season. A more likely prediction is that they will go 0-9 in Pac-12 play for the third time in four years, though, and I will play this one 'under'.
