2018 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
Ole Miss is still dealing with the fallout from the Hugh Freeze fiasco. And this year will be their second in a row impeded by a bowl ban. But I have to hand it to coach Matt Luke; he is plowing ahead with his rebuild and reshaping this team into a faster, pass-happy team that could be a potential spoiler in the SEC.
The Rebels finished No. 11 in the country in passing offense last year and No. 18 in total offense while scoring 33 points per game. And if quarterback Jordan Ta'amu can build on his late-season success (66.5 percent completions, 11 touchdowns and four interceptions) then Mississippi really might be in business. Ta'amu could be a leader this season. But he is also serving as a valuable place holder for top prospect Matt Corral, a freshman.
Mississippi also has its three top receivers back, including electric A.J. Brown. He caught 75 balls for 1,252 yards and 11 touchdowns last year. DaMarkus Lodge and D.K. Metcalf combined for 80 catches and 14 more touchdowns. And the trio could be even better this time around.
Second-year coordinator Wes McGriff cleared the decks on the defensive side of the ball. And it was needed. These guys were horrendous last year. Some of that was an offshoot of Luke's fast-tempo offense putting the defense back on the field repeatedly. But some of that was just awful play. There are just four starters back. But the fact is that this group has to almost accidentally be better.
Mississippi has an interesting opener with a Texas Tech. Tech, like Ole Miss, is a run-and-shoot team, and that should be a high-scoring affair. The Rebs also have three winnable home nonconference games against Southern Illinois, Kent State and Louisiana-Monroe.
This season win total jumped off the board at me. And that's because it's a lot higher than I expected. The Rebels won six games last year and five the year before that. They were picked second-to-last in the SEC West and are considered the third-worst team in the league. You also have to wonder about this team's motivation level with no potential for a bowl game.
So why are the books setting a number that would require them to win seven or eight games? It doesn't make sense. I will play the one 'under'. But when a line smells fishy like this it usually means there are some underlying, unknown factors. And I don't like to mess with that. This one will definitely be one to stay away from for me. But I'll be expecting a much more competitive Rebels team than the media and the general public are anticipating.
