For a basketball school, Kentucky has produced a couple of solid football seasons. After coming heartbreakingly close to bowl games in 2014 and 2015, the Wildcats broke through for back-to-back bowl appearances in 2016 and 2017. Now they will be gunning for their third straight bowl game, something the Wildcats have accomplished only twice in over 100 years of football.

I actually think Kentucky will get there. If only barely.

Running back Benny Snell is a workhorse and is on pace to set a school rushing record. He is working behind four returning offensive linemen and burly tight end C.J. Conrad. If new quarterback Terry Wilson, a transfer from Oregon, can provide a spark then this has the chance to be one of the best UK offenses of the decade.

If Kentucky wants to get back to a bowl game, though, their defense will have to make some strides. They do have eight starters back, with five three-year starters, and seven total seniors leading the way. Kentucky was No. 102 against the pass last year and has to shore that up quickly.

Kentucky has three winnable nonconference home games against Central Michigan, Murray State and Middle Tennessee. They need to get all three. The Wildcats also get weak-sister Vanderbilt in Lexington. That means Kentucky just needs to find two more wins on their schedule to get to .500.

The Wildcats have won four SEC games each of the last two seasons. They have four games on the schedule against teams with new coaches, and their rivals, Louisville, are also rebuilding after losing former Heisman Lamar Jackson. So Kentucky's 15 starters and stable systems on both sides of the ball give them an edge that they should be able to exploit. At least well enough to go 3-5 in SEC play and get to that bowl game.
