2018 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
Things could not have gone worse for the Gators last season. Ten players, including several starters, were suspended before the season opener. Then their second game was cancelled because of a hurricane. They mustered a three-game winning streak. But then the bottom dropped out with five straight losses, a rash of injuries, several blowouts and a lame duck coach by November. When the dust settled the Gators had just four wins for the second time this decade. And those two four-win seasons were the only two since the 1970s.
Enter Dan Mullen. The man that rebuilt Mississippi State is now charged with taking Florida back to the level of the SEC elite. And he will be doing so with a stacked roster full of talented, experienced Gators that should be motivated to prove that last year was a fluke.
The first obstacle for Mullen will be finding a quarterback. Florida used to be a quarterback factory. But sophomores Felipe Franks and Kyle Trask have a long way to go before they will be mistaken for top-tier signal callers. They also have highly-touted prospect Emory Jones in the mix for the starting job.
Whoever wins the quarterback competition will have a host of talented playmakers to work with. Jordan Scarlett redshirted last season after gaining 1,000 yards as a sophomore. He is the leader of a stacked backfield. Florida has four of its top five receivers back, even though none of them caught more than 22 balls last year.
Defensively, last year's Gators allowed the most points of any Florida team in more than 30 years. They have nine starters back and seven of their top nine tacklers. And with new coordinator Todd Grantham, who is an SEC veteran after tours at Georgia and Mississippi State, this unit should be primed for a major bounce back.
Three home games to open the year will give Florida a great opportunity to get some early momentum. And three home games in a row to open November should give them a late boost into their rivalry game at Florida State. Road games at Tennessee and Vanderbilt early are also both very winnable, and the Gators only have to leave the state of Florida three times all season long.
The Gators are legit. Mullen has been an outstanding coach at Mississippi State. And his familiarity with the SEC is going to be a major advantage. This team has to be extremely motivated to show that last season was a fluke. And with 19 returning starters and a ton of former four- and five-star recruits on the roster, Mullen is going to have a lot to work with.
Florida has two tough early games, at Mississippi State and then at home against LSU. If they win those then they should be undefeated and off a bye week rolling into the Cocktail Party game with Georgia. A win there - which would be a significant upset - and Florida could be back in the SEC title game.
I know it seems like a stretch given how bad the Gators were last year. But a double-digit win season is not beyond the realm of possibility for this group. I'll ride the 'over'.
