2018 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
The Huskies have barely been a D-I college football team over the past five years, going 16-43 against FBS opponents. Randy Edsall was brought back in an attempt to build the Huskies back up to the level of respectability on which they perched before his 2011 departure. But last year didn't give any indication that this team is even close. And a quick scan across the roster heading into fall camp doesn't instill any confidence in the short term.
Over the last six years the Huskies have had - and I truly mean this - the worst offense I've ever seen. The Huskies have averaged fewer than 18 points per game four times - FOUR! -- in the last six years. Last year's 23.6 points per game - which was No. 102 in the nation - was considered an offensive avalanche after UConn had averaged just 15.9 points per game the previous three seasons.
To put that in context, the 588 points that Connecticut scored from 2014-2016 were still nearly 40 points less than divisional foe Central Florida scored in just 13 games last season.
With seven starters back, Connecticut should be a little bit better on offense this year. But, again, that bar is comically low. The key will be developing a quarterback. Senior David Pindell is the unquestioned starter. But, frankly, I don't understand that at all. Pindell completed only 52.8 percent of his passes last season with four touchdowns and six interceptions. The guy is a senior. And in his previous three years on campus he wasn't able to beat out any of the total losers and clowns that the Huskies were using. So his upside is astonishingly limited.
Connecticut has its top two rushers and five of its top six receivers back. They also have four returning starters along the offensive line.
The Huskies defense was even worse than the offense last year, allowing 38 points per game (No. 121). So I suppose it is good news that they have nine new starters on that side of the ball. The problem is that they will be incredibly young on this side of the ball. Edsall will likely have between six and nine freshmen and sophomores starting on defense. So expect this team to get lit up early.
Connecticut has a brutal opening month. They start the year hosting defending AAC champion Central Florida. They also have nonconference road games at Boise State and at Syracuse, two high-powered offenses that should take advantage of their young defense. They also have a road game at Memphis on Oct. 6 with a road game at South Florida on Oct. 20 following a bye week.
Things get easier down the stretch. The Huskies have a lot of winnable games down the stretch. How many they get remains to be seen. Connecticut should handle FCS foe Rhode Island and Independent opponent Massachusetts. So in order to earn a 'push' on this number they just need one conference win. They haven't gone winless in league play in over a decade. And if the Huskies can steal two wins in conference then this wager is home. I think Edsall will get them there.
