2018 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
I was a bit skeptical of Mike Bobo when he took over Colorado State. He never impressed me all that much at Georgia as the offensive coordinator. But he has posted three straight winning years in Fort Collins and has kept the Rams solidly in the second tier in the Mountain West.
Bobo will be breaking in a new starting quarterback for the first time in his stint at Fort Collins. Nick Stevens gave Bobo three really good seasons. But now the Rams will pivot toward Washington grad transfer K.J. Carta-Samuels. Carta-Samuels has thrown only 47 passes in three years. But he has a wealth of athleticism to work with.
The Rams have just four returning starters on offense. And one of them is sophomore tight end Cam Butler. Bobo has worked wonders with transfers. And they are hoping sophomore Preston Williams will be able to fill some of the void left by Michael Gallup's graduation. Gallup led the offense with 100 catches and seven touchdowns.
The defense faces a similar transition. They have just five starters back from a pretty mediocre group.
Last year the Rams scored a Power 5 win over Oregon State, and they showed well in a tough game at Alabama, losing by just 18 (as 28-point underdogs). This year they have another challenging nonconference slate that has them playing three straight against teams from major conferences: Colorado (in Denver), Arkansas and at Florida.
The Rams get an easy game against Illinois State followed by a bye week after that grueling early stretch. They then open league play at San Jose State and New Mexico, meaning they should pick up two more easy wins. If they manage to win their season opener at home against Hawaii then Colorado State should be 3-0 in MWC play when they head to Boise State for a huge Friday night game.
Colorado State ends the regular season with four more 50-50 games: Wyoming, at Nevada, Utah State and at Air Force.
I think this is clearly a transitional season for the Rams. Bobo has done an excellent job. But there's really no telling what Carta-Samuels is going to do for them. This is an extremely young team. And there is no telling what their mindset or confidence level will be if they get pasted by Colorado, Arkansas and Florida in three straight weeks.
This is a good number. And I think that Colorado State will be very close to getting 'over'. I wouldn't touch this number. But if I have to make a call I would go 'under'.
