2018 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
The Buffaloes couldn't build on their dream 2016 season. After winning 10 games and earning a surprise trip to the Pac-12 title game, the Buffs came back down to earth last season. They opened the year with three straight wins before collapsing to a 2-7 mark in league play.
This season Colorado is rebuilding yet again. They have just 10 returning starters from last year's team. And they look poised to claim their 10 th losing season in the last 11 years.
There's just really nothing there on offense for the Buffaloes. Steven Montez is a relatively efficient passer, completing better than 60 percent of his passes with a 2-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. But he lost his top three wideouts and four of his top six pass catchers. Colorado also needs to replace bell cow running back Phillip Lindsay and his 1,500 rushing yards.
Colorado's league struggles last year are directly related to their defensive woes. They allowed a touchdown more per game from 2016 to 2017. They plummeted to No. 109 in total defense and No. 108 rushing defense last year. So having four guys back in the front seven isn't really much of a benefit.
A season-opening rivalry game with Colorado State in Denver is a potential tone-setter. If Colorado loses that game then they could be in serious trouble. The Buffs follow that up with a trip to Lincoln to take on a transitioning Nebraska squad. After that comes the home opener against New Hampshire.
After that is all Pac-12 games. The South is definitely the weaker of the two divisions. So there will be some winnable games for the Buffs, especially since they host both Oregon State and Arizona State. They also get UCLA at home in the league opener, and the Bruins are shifting to Chip Kelly's spread-option attack. Fortunately for the Buffaloes, they will have already faced a similar attack in the Nebraska game.
Mike MacIntyre is in his sixth year at the controls of this program. You'd think that they would be a little further ahead than this. But this program seems resigned to its place at the bottom of the Pac-12 barrel. And they should be near there again this season. But I do think they will do enough to get their five wins and get 'over'.
