2018 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
The Clemson-Alabama rivalry has developed into one of the defining rivalries in this entire era of college football. These two top-tier programs have met in the College Football Playoff in three consecutive seasons, with Alabama winning twice. And as we enter the 2018 season it looks likely that these two teams are on a collision course once again.
And the good news for Clemson is that they seem to have the upper hand.
The Tigers are just two years removed from winning the National Championship. And now they enter fall camp with perhaps the most talented roster in the country and with perhaps their best team in school history.
It starts up front, where Clemson has a jaw-dropping defensive line. The Tigers have all four starters back from a group that finished No. 4 in scoring defense, No. 2 in total defense, and No. 2 in pass defense. Oh yeah: they were No. 12 in defending the rush as well. Clelin Ferrell, Dexter Lawrence and Christian Wilkins are all three-year starters and future NFL first-round draft picks. And senior defensive end Austin Bryant may be the best of the bunch.
That front four should absolutely dominate. But they aren't the only talents on the roster. The back seven is loaded with high recruits and potential all-ACC players. This should be the best defense in the nation.
The only question mark is at quarterback. But Clemson's problem is one that most schools would kill for. They will need to choose between last year's starter, Kelly Bryant, or freshman Trevor Lawrence, one of the top three quarterback recruits in the nation.
Whoever claims the quarterback gig will be working behind an accomplished, veteran offensive line and will be distributing the ball to a coterie of explosive, high-end skill players. There is no weakness on this attack.
Clemson has lost only four times over the past three years, winning 40 games in the meantime. Only two of those losses have come during the regular season, and they have come by a combined four points. The Tigers have to go undefeated in order to beat this number. Are you running to the window to bet against them? Me neither.
The Tigers have only four games that I think that they have any chance of losing. And they will be significant favorites in all of these games. The first is at Texas A&M on Sept. 8. But the Aggies have a new coach and are rebuilding. The second is at Georgia Tech on Sept. 22. And Clemson has dominated the Jackets over the course of the past five years. The third is a key game at Florida State on Oct. 27. The Tigers have won three straight in the series. But they have never beaten FSU four straight years, and the road team is just 3-13 in this series.
Finally, the Tigers close the year with rival South Carolina. But that game is at home, and the last time the Gamecocks came to Clemson they lost by 49 points.
I think the Tigers will go undefeated or, at most, lose once. So I will take the 'over' even though there is no way I would bet this number.
