2018 Season Win Total Prediction: 'Over'
Despite being overmatched from a talent standpoint, year-in and year-out, Boston College has remained competitive in the ACC under Steve Addazio. His old-school, punch-them-in-the-mouth brand of football is a breath of fresh air in this pass-wacky, scoring-crazed sport. And this year's Eagles team should be ready to lay some more lumber on unsuspecting foes.
The Eagles have finished the year above .500 in four of Addazio's five years. And this might be his best team yet. Addazio has 10 returning offensive starters and seven on the defensive side of the ball. He has seven three-year starters and 11 seniors suiting up on the first string. And if they can cobble together some decent quarterback play then B.C. will be as tough of a W as any team in the ACC.
Sophomore quarterback Anthony Brown has a lot of work to do, though. He barely completed over 50 percent of his passes and had 11 touchdowns to nine interceptions. But with a year under his belt, the hope is that he will show some maturity and more playmaking in his second season.
It helps that Brown has A.J. Dillon, first team all-ACC running back, to give the rock to. Dillon logged 300 carries for 1,589 yards last year and is an animal. He'll tote the ball behind one of the league's top offensive lines. The 139 career starts between these five linemen make them one of the five most experienced groups in the nation.
Addazio's squads are always rock-solid on defense. And this year will be no exception. Sophomore John Lamot looks like he could be the next prototype linebacker to come off the B.C. assembly line. He's one of three returning starters at linebacker, and that doesn't include Connor Strachan, a 2016 starter that missed last year with injury.
The Eagles can also lean on safety Lukas Denis, a second-team All-American, to clear things up in the pass defense.
Because of their style of play, Boston College isn't an overwhelming favorite. But they really do have an opportunity to get off to a great start. They host Massachusetts, Holy Cross and Temple in the first month of the season. And their two road games are against Wake Forest and Purdue, two teams that are on B.C.'s talent level. It's not beyond the realm of belief that the Eagles could emerge from that opening month 4-1.
So the question becomes: are there three more wins on this schedule?
The Eagles host a Louisville team that lost its star quarterback, and they go on the road to take on a North Carolina State that lost everything but. The Eagles also close the season with a home game against a soft Syracuse team. If they can't win those three games (two at home) then they will need to spring an upset on Miami, Virginia Tech, Clemson or Florida State.
This is a tight number. If Boston College bursts out to a 5-0 start then they will get to seven with ease. If they can win four of those games then it will take some bloody knuckles in ACC play to clear the bar. The Eagles have won at least four league games in three of Addazio's five seasons and reached .500 in ACC play six times in the past decade. I think they will get one of those upsets, and I can see the Eagles punching their way to seven or eight victories.
