2018 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
History will show the Alabama dynasty as one of the greatest achievements in college football history. The Crimson Tide once again enter fall camp as the defending National Champions. They have won a stunning five titles in 10 years. And with all the impediments in major collegiate athletics, both on the field and off, this is a feat we may not see again for a long, long time.
But I'm not here to worship at the altar of Alabama. In fact, last year's national title was another sham, their second garbage, BS national title of their dynasty. The Crimson Tide did not win their division last year. They did not win their conference title last year. Yet they were once again "grandfathered" into the College Football Playoff based on, I don't know, recruiting rankings?
There is no coherent argument that anyone can make as to why Alabama made the playoff last year. That they won two games is irrelevant; they never should've been there to begin with. It is similar to their sham title in 2011-12, when they were placed in the BCS Title Game against LSU (a team they had lost to at home that season) despite - stop me if you've heard this one - not winning their division or their conference.
Further, the SEC was a joke last year. It was an absolute joke, and it was not a good football conference. LSU lost to Troy. Texas A&M and Auburn barely beat Nicholls State and Mercer, respectively, while Arkansas beat Coastal Carolina by one. Florida and Tennessee were total trash fires, and six of the 14 teams in the league got new coaches after the season.
But hey, Alabama must be great, right? All the writers said so. And they must be great this year, right? Because they are Alabama.
Or something.
The Crimson Tide went just 6-8 against the spread last year. And I don't think that their talent level, with just 10 returning starters back, is any better this time around. Nick Saban does have a football factory working at max capacity, though. And another cupcake schedule - for the third time in four years Alabama doesn't play road games on back-to-back weeks at any point - in the overhyped SEC should make for another double-digit win season.
Alabama doesn't play any of the top three teams in the SEC East. They get the only two good teams in the West, Mississippi State and Auburn, at home. And their only decent nonconference game is against rebuilding Louisville to open the year. Honestly, the Crimson Tide don't have any losable games this year. The SEC stinks again, and Alabama won't be tested until the postseason.
With their talent and this comical schedule, Alabama SHOULD go undefeated. But, honestly, there are 5-10 other teams that I would expect to win 11 or more games with this schedule as well. So play this one 'over', but don't get caught up in the hype; Alabama is not nearly as good as everyone thinks they are.
