2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
It was obvious that Utah was going to need some time to adjust to the Pac-12. But heading into their fifth season in the league it looks like the Utes are on solid footing and ready to be a factor in the South race. This is one of Kyle Whittingham's best teams, and they appear set to build on last year's nine-win campaign.
The major issue for this team is the quarterback position. They rotated guys last year as senior Travis Wilson just refuses to stay healthy. The offense was No. 76 in total yards and averaged just 31.3 points per game - very low by Pac-12 standards. They have their top five rushers back, and we should expect more ground-and-pound from this group.
Utah was a force on the road last year, winning five of six away from Salt Lake City. That included big upsets at Michigan, at UCLA and at Stanford. They have five road games this year. But with three of them coming at USC, at Oregon and at Arizona, I don't see them matching last season's away success.
Utah's early schedule is daunting. They host Michigan in Jim Harbaugh's return to college coaching. The following week the Utes have a rivalry game against plucky Utah State, and the Utes close the month with a trip to Autzen.
The second half of the year is still challenging. Utah hosts some difficult teams, and the Utes are just 14-11 straight up in their last 25 home games.
This team is going to be better than its record. They have basically turned themselves into a poor man's Stanford. But the schedule is a little too much. I think they get to six or seven wins and a bowl game. But I can't see Utah clearing this bar. Play 'under'.
