2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
The Quack Attack keeps, well, quacking. Oregon lost in the National Championship Game last year. But they are retooled, reloaded, and ready to make another run at the school's first national title. However, I think Oregon's season win total says a lot about how vulnerable they are this year. For a team that's averaged 10.6 wins over the last decade, to face just a 9.5 season win total is a bit of a red flag.
Oregon does lose Heisman winner Marcus Mariota, a four-year starter at quarterback. The Ducks will turn to senior transfer Vernon Adams, a standout player at the FCS level from Eastern Washington, to lead the offense this year. He will have two excellent running backs and Oregon's top five receivers to work with, so I don't expect much of a drop-off from Mariotta.
Last year's defense excelled at creating turnovers - Oregon's plus-23 turnover margin was No. 1 in the country - and they allowed just 23.6 points per game (as opposed to the offense scoring 45.4 per outing). They have five guys on the front seven back but will have almost a whole new secondary, with just two guys gaining any experience last year.
Oregon has to be careful that they don't have a hangover carryover from last year. This team continues to knock on the door of its first-ever national title but came up short for the second time in five years.
The last time Oregon lost more than three games was 2007. And I have a hard time calling for more than two losses here. They have a brutal road schedule, with games at Michigan State, at Arizona State and at Stanford. But will they lose all three of those games? Oregon is also 39-3 SU in Eugene the past six years, so I have a hard time predicting a home loss (they host USC on Nov. 21), either.
I'll trust in the system these guys are running and call for 10 wins and a slight 'over'.
