2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
Cal has been a very good team for my bankroll the past two seasons. I bet against them heavily in 2013 as they bumbled their way to a 1-11 season (2-10 against the spread). But then last year I was on the bandwagon early, hitting several big plays on the improved Golden Bears as they posted five wins and got off to a 7-3 ATS start.
I'm still buying stock in the Golden Bears this year. They won't be a major player in the Pac-12. But this is still a dangerous team that boasts and offense that was in the Top 15 in the country last year in scoring, yards and passing. They should be even better this time around with eight starters back, including three-year starting quarterback Jared Goff.
Obviously, the defense needs a lot of work. They surrendered 43.9 points per game in their last 10 games last year and simply couldn't stop teams when they needed to. They have nine starters back and should benefit from more turnover luck. But they have a long way to go.
Cal is the most experienced team in the Pac-12 and one of the more experienced in the country with 13 projected senior starters. Unfortunately, their schedule is a lot more difficult this year, including a nonconference game at Texas. Also, none of their wins last year came against a team that made it to a bowl game.
That said, I think if things break right Cal could win seven games this year. Instead I will call for six wins and their first bowl trip since 2011. Either way, this team is good enough to get 'over'.
