2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
Last year's Sun Devils were one of the biggest surprises in the country, lurching out to an 8-1 start and climbing to No. 7 in the country after they demolished Notre Dame 55-21. But Arizona State, which started last season with just eight returning starters, lost two of their final three regular-season games and barely held on for a bowl win.
The Sun Devils have 16 returning starters this year but do lose quarterback Taylor Kelly. Senior Mike Bercovici did a good job as a fill-in last year with 1,445 passing yards and a 3-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. But he won't have stud wideout Jaelen Strong to bail him out this year. Coach Todd Graham has made his name on offense, though, and ASU should have no problem putting up points again this fall.
Defensively, the Sun Devils have nine players back but have to get better against the pass. They ranked just No. 109 in the country last year, and they nearly blew several games last season.
Arizona State had a somewhat charmed season last year, pulling out a miracle win at USC with a Hail Mary and using second-half comebacks to beat Washington and Utah (in overtime). On the whole this team played way above its head last year.
This year's schedule is favorable. They get USC, Oregon and Arizona in Tempe, and they have only four total games in opposing stadiums. The key nonconference game is an opener against Texas A&M in Houston in what should be a shootout.
I wouldn't go near this team's season win total. They are a boom-or-bust group. They should be more talented than last year, and they have a nice schedule. But there are a lot of statistical metrics pointing to a regression season. Regardless, I will play 'over' here, and we'll see if they can get to 10 wins for the third straight season.
