Dave Christensen couldn't capitalize on having one of the top quarterbacks in Wyoming history, Brett Smith, and was given his walking paper. New head coach Craig Bohl will try to pick up the pieces and rebuilt a program that has only finished above .500 three times in the last decade.
Bohl is making the step up from the FCS, where he was a three-time national champion with North Dakota State. Granted, this is a big step up in class. But Bohl's systems give reason for optimism.
Wyoming has 16 starters back, but needs to replace Smith on offense. The return of the team's top rusher (Shaun Wick) and top receiver (Dom Rufran) gives some hope. Defensively there are nine starters back and the Cowboys could start the year with nine seniors starting on that side of the ball.
Bohl has a chance for a strong start to his tenure with home games against Montana, Air Force and Florida Atlantic all coming in the opening month. Wyoming does have two paycheck games against Oregon and Michigan State. But they also host San Jose State as well as playing toss-up road games at Hawaii (Wyoming will be off a bye) and at New Mexico.
I like the Cowboys to surpass their modest expectations in Bohl's first season. He went 43-2 the last three years at NDSU and he has a ton of senior experience (14 senior starters) to work with. I think Wyoming will get to five wins and if they could pull off an upset somewhere along the line they could threaten to hit .500.
