It has been an average couple seasons for the Badgers, who have gone just 17-10 after going 32-8 the previous three seasons. But thanks to being on the favorable end of Big Ten realignment the Badgers can be average and still dominate their bumbling competition in the limp West.
This year the Badgers welcome back just three defensive starters. They also lost their top four receivers and 1,400-yard rusher James White. But they should be OK thanks to one of the biggest and best sledgehammers in college football. Their mammoth offensive line (average weight: 320 pounds) paves the way for the No. 8 rushing offense in the country. That sets the tone for coach Gary Anderson's entire operation.
Wisconsin starts the year with an intriguing game against LSU in Houston. They have won 16 straight season openers but they don't normally play anyone of LSU's caliber in the first game. After that things ease up considerably. In fact, they only have about three games in league play that might pose a problem.
Trips to Northwestern and Iowa will be tests. And the Badgers host Nebraska. But beyond that they should be solid favorites in the rest of their Big Ten contests. And even a down Wisconsin team should still be able to cobble together enough wins to be relevant.
But I would play this one 'under'. I don't think they will beat LSU. I think they will fall in one of those other "tough" games. And I think that this Wisconsin team is more susceptible to upset than last year's version. A lot of programs would love a 9-3 season. But for the Badgers it would be a loser compared to their season win total. Play 'under'.
