Mike Leach has rescued the Washington State program from the abyss, leading them to their first bowl game in a decade last year. Unfortunately that bowl game ended in one of the biggest collapses I can remember - with Wazzou blowing a 15-point lead in the last three minutes - but hopefully it is a springboard for this Cougars program.
Leach retains quarterback Connor Halliday, who made big strides while leading the nation's No. 4 passing offense last year. Halliday desperately needs to cut down on turnovers. But he has his top two rushers, top eight receivers, and two linemen back to work with. The defense is more of a patchwork unit. State has seven starters back on that side. But they need to replace almost the entire secondary - and they weren't any good in pass defense to begin with.
Washington State has a very challenging nonconference schedule. They will face Rutgers in Seattle in an opener that is crucial for both teams this year. The following week, in a letdown situation, the Cougars have to travel to Nevada. They get Utah and Cal early in the year. But visits from Arizona and USC are daunting, as are divisional games against Oregon and Stanford.
I don't like betting against Mike Leach. But I would play this one 'under'. I love Leach's system. And you know he's good for an upset or two this year. But if they don't beat Rutgers in the opener then this team could be 2-3 coming out of September. Again, Leach is a master at finding his way into bowl games. But I think they will come up just short and go 5-7. I wouldn't put a dime on it. But play Wazzou 'under'.
