Old coach Steve Sarkisian brought some excitement to Washington. Now new coach Chris Petersen has brought some intrigue to the Huskies. Petersen left Boise State after an absurdly successful run leading the Broncos. And now he will be tasked with picking up where Sarkisian left off in Seattle.
Quarterback Keith Price, running back Bishop Sankey and tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins are almost impossible to replace. But the Huskies have back just about every other key piece on offense. And Petersen's system is amazing in terms of making the most of what he has to work with. Washington has seven defensive starters back from one of the most improved units in the nation.
Washington really eases into the Petersen Era. They open on the road at Hawaii but should overwhelm the Warriors. Then they play four straight home games, highlighted by a visit from Stanford on Sept. 27 (the week before the Cardinal plays Notre Dame). The Huskies have a bye week before hitting the road for three of their next four games. But two of those road trips are at Cal and Colorado, two league doormats. A second bye week would've been nice. But the Huskies finish the year with eight straight Pac-12 battles.
The Huskies should get off to a 5-1 start. But things get choppy from there. I don't see them beating Oregon or UCLA. And even though they will be favored I don't see this group winning on the road at Cal, Colorado and Washington State. A trip to Arizona is dicey and don't forget about that early Stanford game.
I definitely think there are four losses on this schedule. Price and Sankey meant so much and there will be some transitional pains as the players get used to Petersen's program. I wouldn't want to face this team in a bowl game. But I have them going 'under' in the regular season.
