Three years ago I predicted that Virginia Tech's run as a national power was coming to an end. Their extraordinarily easy schedules and the statistical anomalies I found in their statistics from year to year suggested that the Hokies program had been overachieving for several seasons. Sure enough, Tech has struggled in back-to-back years and they are now a second-tier team in a third-tier college football conference.
Coach Frank Beamer is entering his 28th season and has gone just 15-11 the past two years. If the Hokies struggle again then the calls for Beamer's removal could really gain volume. Beamer only has four starters back on defense and the team lost five of its top nine tacklers. Offensively they are likely glad to replace shaky Logan Thomas under center. And Tech has nine other starters back from last year's erratic unit.
Virginia Tech has four of its first five games in Blacksburg, including a key game against Georgia Tech, and they have a very favorable schedule. The one road game in the opening month is at Ohio State. But Tech only has five total road games. One is a Thursday night affair at Pitt, but the other three (at Duke, Wake and UNC) are all winnable.
This is not a supremely talented Virginia Tech team. But they still play in the much weaker ACC Coastal and they will benefit from an easy schedule. This season win total number is way too low. Even if Tech loses its three toughest games - at Ohio State, vs. Miami and at Duke - it would still take two more upsets for them to finish 7-5. I don't see it happening. I think Tech will win nine games this year and this is an easy 'over' wager.
