The hype around this UCLA program is reaching a fever pitch heading into the season. Many prognosticators believe that Jim Mora has the Bruins positioned for a potential national championship run. And with 17 starters - including stud quarterback Brett Hundley - back from a team that went 10-3 last year it is tough to argue with all the hope around this program.
Hundley is on the Heisman short list and is one of the best players in the nation. He is one of nine starters back from the No. 20 scoring offense in the country. UCLA's defense was also one of the toughest in the Pac-12, allowing just 23.2 points per game, and also welcomes 10 of its top 14 tacklers back.
The main reason for optimism in UCLA is the schedule. The Bruins do have to play Oregon, USC and Stanford. But they get all three of those teams at home. And the road schedule is as easy as it gets, with trips to face rebuilding Arizona State (after a bye week), doormats Cal and Colorado (in back-to-back weeks) and at Washington.
There is a key nonconference clash with Texas in Arlington on Sept. 13 and that game will go a long way to determining UCLA's national prospects this year.
Here is what I know about Jim Mora: he is a loser. The guy has a high opinion of himself. But he's flopped under the weight of expectations at just about every coaching stop he's ever made. UCLA went 10-3 last year. But they lost to just about every good team that they played. Also, this program had just one 10-win season in the past decade and then out of nowhere jumped up to the double-digit plateau. The last time they did that (going 10-2 in 2005) they went 7-6 in the next year.
UCLA won't slip that far. But I think people are too high on this Bruins squad. The fact that this number isn't 10.5, like most of the other national title contenders, tells me that the books aren't taking this team that seriously as well. I will bet against the public - and against Mora - and suggest playing this one 'under'.
