If I didn't have so much respect for Kevin Sumlin, a brilliant offensive mind and NFL-caliber headman, I would think that A&M was in trouble this year. I don't care about the loss of Johnny Manziel as much as I do the losses of Jake Matthews and Mike Evans. But altogether those three departures will at least dent one of the Top 5 offenses in the country.
A&M will put up solid offensive numbers. Believe that. Sumlin's system is proven. And it is plug-and-play. The biggest issue for the Aggies is the defense, which returns nine starters but was ranked No. 109 in the nation last year. If they can improve dramatically on that side of the ball then I think the offense will hold up its end of the bargain.
The Aggies are in an absolutely loaded SEC West and to make matters worse they drew a road game at South Carolina out of the East. The cherry on top is that South Carolina game is the season opener with a freshman quarterback under center. I think it is safe to pencil in that loss, along with losses to Alabama and LSU.
Are there two more L's on the schedules to keep them under this win total? There may be. The Aggies hit the road to face Arkansas (in Arlington), Mississippi State and Auburn. They also have tough home games against Ole Miss and former Big 12 foe Missouri. I really just can't see them going 4-1 in those five games.
I don't think A&M will be as bad off as most people do. I think they will go 7-5 and then crush someone in their bowl game. But I have to play them 'under' here.
