The Volunteers went 5-7 last season - the third straight year they posted that mark - and that means that they are oh so close to bowl eligibility, right? Wrong. Tennessee sucks. And even though I have a load of respect for coach Butch Jones he won't be able to turn around this train wreck that quickly.
Tennessee has just 10 returning starters, combined, on both sides of the ball. One of them is senior quarterback Justin Worley and I'm not a big fan of his work. The Vols have zero starters back on the offensive and defensive lines and they boast just five senior starters. This team is clearly still rebuilding.
The Vols beat Austin Peay, Western Kentucky, South Alabama and Kentucky for four of their wins last year. (How they beat South Carolina I will never know.) One of their cupcake nonconference games last year is replaced by a trip to Oklahoma this season, which will not end well.
Tennessee would have to beat Utah State (with Chuckie Keeton back under center), Kentucky and Vanderbilt just to ensure five wins. Then they would still have to spring another upset over a big boy program to get to six victories.
I don't see it happening. I think Tennessee takes its lumps this year and sets itself up for a surprise season in 2015. Play the Vols 'under'.
