For all the talk about the SEC powers the past few years it is easy to overlook South Carolina as one of the best programs in the nation. They have gone 33-6 in the last three years and have finished in the Top 10 each of those seasons. In fact, only two of USC's last 12 losses since 2009 have come against teams outside the Top 25 and this team is a machine.
Connor Shaw, the winningest quarterback in program history, has graduated. New quarterback Dylan Thompson was able to pick up some experience filling in the last few years and leads an offense with a ton of returning talent and depth. Defensively the Gamecocks have a host of ferocious athletes to unleash and one of the best back sevens in the country. They were in the Top 20 in scoring and total defense last year and we should expect more of the same.
USC has one of the stranger schedules I've seen this year. They play five of their first six games - including a Thursday night opener against A&M - against SEC opponents. They also have a bye before a home game against Furman and a Nov. 22 game against South Alabama that's nestled between monster road games at Florida and at Clemson.
South Carolina's SEC road schedule is manageable. They draw Vandy and Kentucky. They also have essentially two weeks to prepare for a trip to Auburn and have a bye week before their game at Florida. I think they can win three of their five road games this year. And if they beat Georgia in Columbia there's a good chance this team can run the table at home.
I think that South Carolina is going to win at least 10 games this year. I think they enter the year as the favorite in the SEC East and they have to be considered a sleeper national title contender. I would play this one 'over'.
