2014 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
The Mustangs had a streak of four straight bowl games snapped last year as they slogged through a 5-7 rebuilding season. However, things don't appear to be that rebuilt this season and I think it is going to be another nondescript season for June Jones' bunch.
SMU lost quarterback Garrett Gilbert, who was able to resuscitate his career after a transfer from Texas. SMU does return a lot of skill position experience. But they finished a very un-Jones-like No. 76 in the nation in scoring last year with just 26.8 points per game. The defense was barely in the Top 100 (No. 99) and will be a liability again this season with five new starters.
A nonconference schedule that includes Baylor, Texas A&M and TCU is unforgiving. SMU also has to play all four of the top teams in the AAC, with roadies at East Carolina and at Central Florida. A December trip to Connecticut could also be tricky for this warm-weather team.
Jones has always been a great underdog coach. But he just doesn't have the talent to return to a bowl game this year. I think a more accurate season win total would be 4.5 for this team, in which case I'd stay away. But if the books dangled a 3.5 I would have to play 'over' simply out of respect for Jones.
