The Scarlet Knights move to the Big Ten this year and the expectation is that Rutgers is going to struggle with a large step up in class. However, the Scarlet Knights are a good fit for the rugged style of football Midwest teams are known to play. And this program has managed three straight bowl games and a solid 64-39 overall record the past eight seasons.
Rutgers has 16 returning starters, including quarterback Gary Nova. Nova's experience is a blessing and a curse; it's nice to have a three-year starter but Nova has never proven that he can be a consistent, winning signal caller. The defense was also a bust last year, ranking No. 95 in yards allowed and No. 100 against the run.
The Scarlet Knights open against Mike Leach and Washington State. They also have to face solid Penn State and Navy squads before the calendar turns to October. But the most daunting portion of the schedule comes when they play at Ohio State, at Nebraska and versus Wisconsin in consecutive weeks. Finishing at Michigan State and at Maryland is also no easy chore.
I think Rutgers will manage a road win at Washington State, at Navy or at Maryland. They have layups against Howard and Tulane as well as an extra week to prepare for Big Ten doormat Indiana. I think the Scarlet Knights pick up four wins out of that group right there. I also think that this hard-nosed team will manage at least one huge upset of the league powers.
This Rutgers program is proud. And it is hard-nosed. They aren't going to be scared of the teams in the Big Ten and - like we saw with Big 12 invaders into the "mighty" SEC - they are going to provide proof that this league isn't as far ahead of the rest of the country as media bobbleheads make it out to be. I'll gladly play this team 'over'.
