Mike Riley had a bizarre season last year, beginning with a stunning home loss to Eastern Washington and ending with a surprising blowout win over Boise State. In between Oregon State took advantage of a weak schedule to earn a bowl trip. Oregon State put a scare into Stanford and Oregon last year. But this team's 7-6 mark was a bit misleading and we will find out what this team is all about this fall.
The Beavers have seven starters back on both sides of the ball and this is a very veteran team. They have 12 senior starters among the regulars to go along with a pair of senior kickers. Quarterback Sean Mannion has to cut down on turnovers. And if he does he can build on last year's 37 touchdowns and 4,600 passing yards.
The key is also to get better defensively. Oregon State was No. 100 in total defense and No. 90 in points allowed. This side of the ball needs to make major improvements if this team is going to be anything better than mediocre.
Oregon State has a simple nonconference schedule. Then they have a season-defining four-game stretch that includes road games at USC, at Colorado and at Stanford with a lone home game against tricky Utah. After that the Beavers finish with four of their last five games at home, including the season ending clash with Oregon.
It is hard to trust a team that lost to Eastern Washington to take care of business this year. And we have to assume the Beavers will blow at least one game that they shouldn't lose. Even so, I still think I can find eight wins on this schedule, assuming that the Beavers can dodge a soul-sucking loss to any of the weaker sisters they play in September.
I would play Oregon State 'over'.
