Ole Miss is just 6-10 in the SEC over the past two years. But they have scored a host of recruiting victories over the last two offseasons and they are on the verge of seeing those signees pay major dividends. And after an 8-5 effort last year the Rebels are also on the verge of being a team that no one wants to play come October.
Mississippi has 15 returning starters back after quietly finishing No. 21 in the country in total offense and No. 38 in total defense. Three of those starters - WR LaQuon Treadwell, LT Laremy Tunsil, and DT Robert Nkemdiche - were freshmen All-Americans last year and all three are future NFL players. Add in stud quarterback Bo Wallace and the top five tacklers from last year and Ole Miss has some big-time talent in key places.
The Rebels avoid the three best teams from the SEC East. But they make up for that with a loaded West schedule. They have road tests at A&M, LSU and Arkansas. But they should be favored in the rest of their home games, sans a meeting with Alabama on Oct. 4.
Another problem is the opening card. The Rebels square off with a savvy and talented Boise State team in Atlanta to start the season. They follow that up with a trip to Vanderbilt, where the revenge-minded Commodores await. The key game, though, is the Boise State affair and if Ole Miss wins that then they should be 4-0 when they play Alabama and no worse than 5-2 when they head to Baton Rouge on Oct. 25.
I think the schedule, with three of the last four games at home and the lone road game at Arkansas, sets up well for a strong finish. So Mississippi's season will be defined by how it starts. No matter how things shake out this is a strong number from the books and I think the Rebels will be within a half-game either way. I would bet the 'over' as long as you don't have to lay more than -125 or -130 on the juice.
