Bo Pelini loses four games every year. It's just the way it is. No matter how good or bad his roster is, Pelini finds a way to lose/only lose four games each season. So it was an easy call for the books to post Cornhuskers' season win total at 8.0. And it's an even easier call for me to pass on this total and predict a 'push'.
Nebraska has just 11 returning starters and this is one of the youngest teams in the country (No. 97 in experience). It is also the fewest starters that Nebraska has welcomed back since 2008. A large part of this season rests on the development of quarterback Tommy Armstrong. But the Huskers can lean on potential All-American Ameer Abdullah if anything goes wrong.
The defense has been nothing better than mediocre under Pelini. Nebraska was No. 50 in scoring defense and No. 40 in total defense last year. The Huskers were a horrid -11 in turnover margin and if their tweaks on defense pay dividends in that area this team could overachieve past its experience level.
Nebraska has a lot of gimme games. FAU, McNeese State, and Illinois all come to Lincoln in September. The Huskers also have home games against Rutgers, Purdue and Minnesota and they could win all three of those tilts. Add in a road win at Fresno State and that makes seven victories.
The problem is that I think Nebraska will get upset at home, either by one of the listed teams or by Miami, which comes to town on Sept. 20. Nebraska only has four league road games. But I don't know if they will win any of them.
I'm would play Nebraska 'under' if the books are offering 8.5. I would play 'over' if the books were to dip down to 7.5 (which they never would). I think 8.0 is a rock solid number and I would punt on this total.
