The clock is ticking on Brady Hoke. He has seen his win total decrease every season he has been at the helm of the Wolverines. And if there isn't something significant this year then he could be sent out on a rail.
Michigan's season comes down to talented quarterback Devin Gardner and how far he can carry the Wolverines. He is one of seven starters back on offense. However, the attack unit will have six freshmen or sophomores in the starting lineup and they will need to grow up in a hurry. The defense has eight starters back, including five seniors, and they will try to improve on Michigan's No. 66 scoring rank.
The Wolverines have a schedule tailor-made for a throwback season. If Michigan can go to South Bend and win in Week 2 - in a series dominated by the road team - then they have a great chance to be 7-0 when they head to East Lansing for a rivalry matchup at Michigan State on Oct. 25. Michigan hosts Indiana and Maryland, sandwiched around a trip to Northwestern, before ending the year at Ohio State.
The fact that Michigan plays its toughest opponents on the road doesn't help Hoke's cause. But even if Michigan loses to Notre Dame, Michigan State and Ohio State they can still top this number. And if you can get the Wolverines at 8.0 then even a fourth road loss at Northwestern would only result in a 'push'.
I think Michigan is going to go 8-4 in the regular season. But if I had to bet this game based on whether I think the odds are greater that they make it to nine wins or falter to seven wins I would play the hopeful angle and take the 'over'.
