The Spartans had an epic season in 2013, winning the Big Ten and then pulling an upset over Stanford in the Rose Bowl. That was the third time in four years that the Spartans have won double-digit games. And now prognosticators project this year's team to the short list of contenders to make the new four-team playoff.
Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook came out of nowhere to become a second team All-Big Ten performer last season. He led a solid but unspectacular unit that will benefit from a host of skill position talent returning. Defensively, the Spartans were dominant last year. But they lost four crucial starters to the NFL. They can't possibly be as good on that side of the ball (Top 5 in all major defensive stats) but should still be good enough to be a player in this league.
The Spartans have a huge trip to Oregon on Sept. 6 that could determine how big of a season they can have. That is the toughest game on the schedule and the Spartans get the rest of their top competition to come to East Lansing. Games against Nebraska, Michigan and Ohio State all come at home and that is perhaps the main reason that expectations are so high for Michigan State.
I think Michigan State is going to get back to 10 wins. I think they will get hammered at Oregon. And even though they have two weeks to prepare and are at home they can't be expected to beat Ohio State in a big revenge situation for the Buckeyes. Even if they win that game I think Michigan State will lose another game along the way. Being able to bet this team at 9.0 would be ideal. But even at 9.5 I would post a lukewarm recommendation on the 'over' because this schedule is as soft as any in the Big Ten.
