Florida State Seminoles vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Saturday Dec. 6, 8 p.m. ET
There are going to be a whole lot of Georgia Tech fans in the country on Saturday, and many of them won't have watched the Rambling Wreck play all year long. The defending champions from Florida State are en route to the playoff. However, thanks to off-field chaos and on-field apathy, they are far from a popular team. They have not lost, so their playoff spot is certain with a win. With a loss, though, their lack of both quality wins and style points could be extremely costly. It all adds a great deal of intrigue to what seems like an unlikely ACC Championship Game - or at least it was before the season started.
Florida State vs. Georgia Tech Betting Storylines
As has too often been the case lately around Florida State, one of the biggest stories has nothing to do with the game itself. On Tuesday Jameis Winston's disciplinary hearing regarding allegations of sexual assault finally gets underway. The hearing is expected to take a day or two, and the results of the hearing aren't expected until after this game is played, but it's a very large distraction for a player that probably doesn't need it as he has already been well below his best this year.
Georgia Tech is not a team that most people have probably watched much this year. Despite a fair bit of success, they haven't gotten a lot of attention - though they have received more after beating Clemson and Georgia in their last two games. What most people do know is that the team is committed to the triple-option. That has certainly been the case this year - the team has completed just 91 passes, which is fewer than eight per game. While that bizarre offensive approach can be a nightmare for opposing defenses, Florida State has one advantage here - they have already faced a triple-option team this year. In their second game of the year they played Citadel. The Bulldogs ran the ball an impressive 56 times and turned that into 250 yards. That's not a great average given that level of commitment, but it's better than an outmatched team like Citadel could have been expected to get otherwise. Georgia Tech is obviously a more talented and effective triple-option team, but at least Florida State knows where to start in their preparation and won't get caught totally off guard.
Florida State has been notoriously slow to get rolling in their games. They have been able to come back every time they have fallen behind early, but it hasn't always been pretty - and it seems like it is going to catch up with them at some point. The good news here, though, is that Georgia Tech is a good match for them on this front. In their two biggest wins over the last two weeks, the team has been significantly stronger in the second half than the first. Against Clemson they were up only 9-3 at the half before erupting for 16 points in the third en route to an eventual 28-6 win. Against Georgia they had just a touchdown in the first half, while adding 17 more after the break and another six in overtime. With both teams slow out of the gate, this first half could be worth a miss. That also helps the Seminoles because it is likely that the hole they have to dig out of when they finally show up is likely to be smaller than it has been in other games.
Florida State Seminoles vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets NCAA Football Odds and Betting Trends
The line threatened to open up higher than it did, but the Seminoles were favored by 3.5 when the dust settled early on. The action is split about evenly between the two teams, so it is unlikely that the line will move dramatically. The total opened at 58.5.
The Seminoles are 0-3-2 ATS in their last five against Georgia Tech. The underdog is 3-0-2 ATS in the last five meetings. The Yellow Jackets have covered their last five spreads overall. Florida State has gone "under" the total in their last four games.
Florida State Seminoles vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Expert Predictions and Picks
Sometimes you know that a decision is being made with your heart and not your head, yet you make it anyway. That's the case here. Florida State is more talented by far, they have been here before, and their motivation should be high. I'm going to take the points and go with the Yellow Jackets, though. I have little respect for how the Seminoles have been starting games, and their mindset overall is a concern. Georgia Tech is in strong form, and they have absolutely nothing to lose. Georgia Tech it is.
