Randy Edsall's departure after the 2010 Fiesta Bowl appearance marked the beginning of the end for both Huskies football and Edsall. Edsall has gone just 13-24 and is on his last life in Maryland while Connecticut suffered through a terrible effort by Paul Pasqualoni and a 13-23 mark the past three seasons.
Connecticut, somehow, still doesn't have a quarterback. They've had four different starters - all of them terrible - over the last two years and they enter the 2014 season with more questions than answers under center.
The quarterback debacle is a shame. Because new coach Bob Diaco has a very stout defense, with 10 returning starters from the nation's No. 23 rush unit.
The Huskies open the Diaco Era with three home games. But they will lose two of them with powerful BYU and Boise State programs coming to Storrs. After that comes a stretch of three of four on the road before closing the season with a manageable four home games in five weeks through November and December.
Connecticut is a long way from another major bowl game. However, I think they are better than this season win total number gives them credit for. Running back Lyle McCombs and the defense alone can scrape together four wins. And if by some miracle a quarterback emerges then this team could even find itself competing for a bowl game.
