The Rams will try to carry over the momentum of their stunning New Mexico Bowl upset of Washington State into this season and are hoping for their third bowl trip in the last 10 years. Jim McElwain is entering that crucial third year as the head of this program and all signs point up for Colorado State in the long term.
In the short term the Rams are going to need to replace 1,700-yard rusher Kapri Bibbs and four of five offensive line starters. They do have their quarterback and five of the top six receivers back. Colorado State's defense has seven returning starters, all in the back eight of their 3-4 base set. They were just No. 80 in the nation last year. But for the third straight season they saw their points allowed totals decrease.
Colorado State's schedule is rough out of the gate. They open with a neutral site game against in-state rival Colorado, to whom they lost 41-27 last year. The Rams follow that up with a trip to Boise State. Add in a Sept. 27 trip to Boston College and an Oct. 11 trip to Nevada and four of CSU's first six games are on the road. Colorado State should be able to string something together late in the year. But will they be in too large of a hole?
I think this is a decent Rams team. But they weren't overly impressive last season. And they don't bring back an abundance of talent this year. I like McElwain and think he's the right guy. But I am calling for Colorado State to play 'under'.
