2014 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
Former Alabama assistant coach Mike MacIntyre is entering Year 2 of his complete overhaul of the Colorado program. The Buffaloes have been in the Pac-12 for three seasons but they are still adjusting to the venues and style of play. But this could be a year to make some progress.
Colorado has 16 total starters back, including sophomore quarterback Sefo Liufau. They lose their stud No. 1 wideout Paul Richardson but there is a bevy of experience at the skill positions. Defensively, the Buffs need to get a lot better. Quickly. They were outside the Top 100 in all major defensive categories and gave up 38.3 points per game.
The Buffaloes open with a very tough rivalry game against Colorado State. That is a crucial game and could set the tone for their entire season. Colorado gets UMass next and then their home opener is versus rebuilding Arizona State. If they could pull an upset there then Hawaii and Cal, two teams that combined to go 2-22 last, are waiting in the wings. It is not completely unrealistic that Colorado could meet or exceed last year's win total before September ends.
Of course, wins will be few and far between after that soft opening. In fact, the Buffs will likely be significant underdogs in their next six games. And it could come down to the season finale, at home against Utah, to determine if Colorado can get past this number.
I would play the Buffs 'over'. They won four games last year and that was with a new coach and all new systems. They have experience and should be more comfortable this year. I think they will get to five wins on the season.
