2014 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'

Things got real ugly, real quickly for Sonny Dykes and Cal last year. Cal barely held off Portland State for their lone victory last season. But the rest of the season they spent getting absolutely hammered, losing by an average of 22.9 points per game. Cal has gone just 4-20 straight up and 5-19 against the spread the last two seasons and they are one of the weakest programs in the nation.

There is hope for optimism, though. Cal was one of the youngest teams in the nation last year. They still aren't a veteran team by any stretch (they have just two senior starters) but the Golden Bears' 13 returning starters should be a lot more comfortable in the second year of the new regime.

Cal will play one of the most difficult schedules in the nation. The will face USC, UCLA, Stanford and Oregon this year. They also have tricky nonconference games against Northwestern and BYU. That is likely six losses right there. And with no gimme games in the league it is very tough to see this team scraping its way to three victories.

However, there are several statistical indicators pointing to an improved season for the Golden Bears. They will beat Sacramento State. And if they can take down Colorado on Sept. 27 - in what is a key swing game for both teams - then Cal will be just one upset away from getting 'over' this season win total. I think they get it. I think Cal will show some progress under Dykes and OC Tony Franklin and I see the Bears getting three victories. Play 'over'.
