Auburn was mere seconds away from the national championship last January. This year they will try to stave off a host of revenge-minded SEC opponents as the Tigers try to defend their league title.
Gus Malzahn is a proven master. And his outstanding offensive system has a lot to work with again this year despite the loss of Tre Mason. Quarterback Nick Marshall and a host of skill players, along with four starters along an outstanding offensive line, are all back in the fold. The defense, though, needs to improve. Auburn's defense finished No. 48 in scoring, No. 100 against the pass, and No. 86 overall.
Auburn enjoyed a dream season last year, going 5-0 during the regular season in games decided by a touchdown or less. That included back-to-back miracle finishes in wins over Georgia and Alabama. They can't expect that level of good fortune again this year.
The Tigers open the season with SEC foe Arkansas and that game is one of several early season landmines for the defending league champions. They do get four of five games at home to start the year. But one of them is a tilt with LSU and the lone road game is a trip out to Kansas State - a tough place for anyone to win.
Road trips to Ole Miss, Georgia and Alabama - three teams trying to avenge close 2013 losses - also line the Tigers' slate. Mix in games against South Carolina and Texas A&M and Auburn plays one of the most difficult schedules in the country.
Auburn went 8-5 in 2012 after they won the national championship the previous season. I don't know that this year's version will backslide that much. But with this schedule I can't see this team losing less than three games. This one is an easy call. Take the 'under'.
