2014 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
The dirty little secret about Alabama football and its recent "dynasty" is that they play an embarrassingly easy schedule each and every season. Alabama gets by on reputation rather than actual performance. And if you don't believe me simply look back at their schedule over the last four years.
The Crimson Tide exploited a weakness in the BCS System. Alabama would start the season ranked in the Top 3 based almost entirely on hype, reputation and arbitrary player rankings. Then they rarely have to prove themselves worthy of their lofty status, helping them coast into prestigious bowl games. All that just perpetuates the cycle.
I'm not saying that Alabama is not a strong program. They are. But I am saying that the Crimson Tide play a comically easy schedule each season and this year is no different. The SEC has been very overrated the last three years and Alabama has taken advantage of the fact that the bottom of the league is pathetic.
The Crimson Tide opens with four straight home and neutral site games. Their two toughest opponents are West Virginia and Florida, which went a combined 8-16 last season. Alabama - so as not to be overexerted - gets a bye week before its first road game of the season, at Ole Miss. Alabama plays back-to-back road games for just the second time in four years when they go to Arkansas the next week.
As usual, Alabama gets a bye week before its one tough game of the year (at LSU). Because, again, god forbid they overexert themselves.
The Tide is just 2-6 ATS in its last eight games against teams that finished the season in the Top 25. Alabama is overrated by the books and by the general public. But I don't see two losses on their schedule this year. I would play them 'over' and there is a good chance that this group goes undefeated playing a bunch of nobodies - again - this year.
