Michigan State (2-1) didn't slide too far down the rankings after their 46-27 loss in Eugene in week two, maintaining the #9 spot in the country. They'll likely move up a few more slots after disposing one last nonconference opponent in Wyoming (3-1) before kicking off Big Ten play next week versus #21 Nebraska. The Cowboys have an impressive record, but have largely been squeaking by some far inferior opponents.
To be fair, Wyoming does have an impressive 17-13 win over Air Force in week two to go along with a 17-12 win against Montana and a 20-19 victory over Florida Atlantic. Their lone loss was a much expected 48-14 loss to Oregon in Eugene. The Cowboys do follow a sound gameplan though – if you can't score at least don't let the opponents. Not counting the Oregon game, Wyoming gives up just 14.7 PPG on the season but while only scoring 18. It's hard to see their offensive totals rise against a dominant MSU defense that is 5th in the nation in rush yards allowed.
The Spartan offense has found balance early in the season, ranking 35th in pass yards (285.7) and 34th in rush yards (223.3) while scoring 48.3 PPG. Quarterback Connor Cook should have a field day against Wyoming, if he gets to play that is. Last week in a 73-14 win over Eastern Michigan Cook threw just 6 passes, completing 5 though while 2 went for TD's. Wyoming is sure to see their 204 passing YPG allowed numbers go up while RB Jeremy Langford looks for his first 100-yard game of the year after compiling 1,422 last season.
Even if MSU is caught looking ahead to next week against Nebraska, they should have the talent to notch an easy win. As almost four TD favorites, it would take a minor miracle for Wyoming to seemingly even keep this game close.
