Big 12 season gets fully underway Thursday night in an electric Boone Pickens Stadium in Oklahoma City as Texas Tech (2-1) makes the 6-hour drive to take on the hometown Cowboys. Oklahoma State is favored by almost two touchdowns but the high-powered Red Raiders would love nothing more than to return the favor of the 52-34 beating OSU gave them last year in Lubbock.
The Red Raiders have the skill position players to pull off the unlikely upset, led by QB Davis Webb who has thrown for 982 yards and 10 TD through 3 games. The TTU passing attack is ranked 17th in the nation but could be put to the test against a Cowboy secondary that has allowed just 352 yards in the air over the last 2 weeks. The Red Raiders are coming off a 49-28 loss to Arkansas at home in which their defense was nothing more than a sieve, giving up 438 yards to the Razorback ground attack. That doesn't bode well going into face an OSU team that averages 176 rushing yards per game.
Oklahoma State has hung 40 points in back to back games after falling just short in their upset bid 37-31 against #1 ranked Florida State Seminols in the opener. Granted Missouri State and UTSA aren't the most elite of opponents, the Cowboys have used a balanced attack in racking up 480 yards of offense in both games. Junior QB Daxx Garman has been impressive seconds coming in for injured starter J.W. Walsh two games ago, throwing for 4 TD against 0 INT but a nationally televised Big 12 conference night game might be baptism by fire for the inexperienced signal caller.
Oklahoma State was impressive in their opener and has worked their way back into the rankings at #24 in AP poll. Both teams will have had 2 weeks to prepare for the conference opener after byes last weekend which means the short week won't have an effect. If the Cowboys can rack up anywhere near the 281 yards they compiled in last year's contest they should be able to get another big win over TTU.
