The Texas A&M offense has been rolling en route to a 3-0 start that has them positioned as the fourth highest scoring team in the nation. That's not good news at all for SMU fans of a Mustang team that has scored 6 points total through three games...while giving up 88. ESPN2 will carry this 3:30ET game Saturday and a national TV audience will likely see Aggie QB Kenny Hill continue his meteoric rise to stardom.
The sophomore Hill has been dynamic in replacing Johnny Manziel as the focal point of the A&M (3-0) offense. Hill threw for 511 yards and 3 TD in a season opening 52-28 win against South Carolina and has followed that with back to back 4 TD performances in a 73-3 win over Lamar and a 38-10 conquering of Rice. Hill has tossed 11 TD and hasn't yet thrown an interception in starting off on an early season Heisman pace. Of course A&M has the heart of their schedule remaining against Ole Miss, Alabama, Auburn, and LSU that will be their signature games of the season, but an early season matchup against a tomato can like SMU serves as a great stats-padder.
It's looking like it will take a minor miracle for SMU to pull off the upset at home, considering they're worst team in the nation in points for and 4th worst in points against. Through 2 games SMU is averaging -7 yards rushing per game. The Mustangs managed just 7 first downs and 67 total yards in a 45-0 season opening loss to Baylor. Coach June Jones got his offense rolling in game 2 by amassing 276 yards but still didn't score until the final play of the game in a 43-6 loss to North Texas. The loss was bad enough that Jones called it quits after the game, resigning in his 7th year with the school. Through 120 minutes of game action in 2014, SMU has had 0 on the board for 119 minutes and 30 seconds.
Defensive coordinator Tom Mason makes his head coaching debut for the Mustangs on Saturday and his job doesn't get any easier. So far the SMU defense has allowed 463 yards per game including 253 per on the ground.
