Saturday afternoon, the Syracuse Orange will take on the Pittsburgh Panthers.

The Syracuse Orange come into this one after a week off that they most likely spent thinking about the 27 – 10 loss that they took at the hands of the Duke Blue Devils back on November 8th.   Syracuse really had no business losing that game because they were in it most of the way.  It was tied at 3 - 3 after the 1st quarter.  Even after Duke took a 10 -3 lead at the half, Syracuse tied the game with the only score of the 3rd quarter.  The 4th quarter would be Syracuse’s undoing.  In front of the home crowd at the Carrier Dome, the Orange allowed the Blue Devils to score 17 unanswered points in the span of 5 minutes in the 4th quarter.  The 7th loss in 8 games will make it tough for the Orange to make it to the postseason but they can play for pride in their last 2 games including this one against Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Panthers also had to ponder a loss of their own.  Pittsburgh was edged by the North Carolina Tar Heels 40 – 35 last week.  Pitt jumped out to a 14 – 0 lead in the 1st quarter after victimizing North Carolina’s weak defense. But the Tar Heels’ offense slowly got them back in the game.  North Carolina scored 2 touchdowns in the 2nd quarter and despite another Pitt TD, they were down by just 8 points at the half.  The teams went back and forth in the 2nd quarter with Pitt failing to keep North Carolina at bay.  Even when Pitt went up 35 -34 with less than 4 minutes to go, they still couldn’t stop North Carolina from scoring the game winning TD with just seconds left.    The Pitt defense will have to stiffen up if they want to get past Syracuse.
