San Jose State had little chance for a win last week, going into Jordan-Hare Stadium to take on the #5 ranked Auburn Tigers. As expected, they were overwhelmed early in allowing Auburn to run out to a 38-10 halftime lead before going on to win 59-13. The Spartans may have taken a thumping but a matchup with the FBS elite lets a team know where they stand and It will be crucial for Minnesota to get into a grove to avoid the upset.
The San Jose State offense did move the ball against Auburn, tallying up 319 yards including 254 through the air. Unfortunately though the Tigers did whatever they wanted in the ground game, amassing a whopping 358 rush yards. QB Blake Jurich has played well for San Jose State in 2014, completing 73.1% of his passes for 468 yards and 4TD. Jurich did injure his arm against Auburn but has had 2 weeks to recover and should be ready for the Golden Gophers.
Minnesota was involved in two high scoring affairs in opening up the season 2-0. The Golden Gophers won 42-20 to start the year despite being outgained 409 to 338 by FCS team Eastern Illinois. Game two saw the opponent once again tallying more yards then Minnesota as Middle Tennessee racked up 445 yards compared to 351 but the Golden Gophers once again escaped with the win. The streak ended last Saturday in Fort Worth as TCU had a balanced offensive attack and forced three Mitch Leidner interceptions to win 30-7. Minnesota's defense is in the bottom 3rd of the FBS, but they have grabbed 5 INT's to lead to some opportune wins.
The oddsmakers have made the Golden Gophers over a TD favorite but don't count out the San Jose State Spartans, especially if they can limit turnovers.
