Middle Tennessee hopes to ride their high-scoring offense across the state in an upset bid over Memphis. The Tigers on the other hand aim to prove their tough battle with #11 UCLA last game was no fluke. Both teams have averaged over 45 PPG thus far in the young 2014 campaign so those who are a fan of defense might want to turn away Saturday night matchup Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.
The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (2-1) will definitely be the more fatigued team after a thrilling 50-47 win over Western Kentucky that took 3 overtimes to decide. The Middle Tennessee defense might want to take an extra hour or two in the film room preparation for this week after allowing Western Kentucky QB Brandon Doughty slice them apart to the tune of 593 yards and 4 TD. The Blue Raider offense on the other hand has Prior to that the woes had been in stopping the opponents rushing attack, particularly in giving up 220 yards to David Cobb in the Golden Gophers 35-24 win in week two. On the other side of the ball though the Blue Raiders offense has been an example of balance throwing for 254.7 YPG and rushing for 247 for the nation's 15th highest scoring team.
Memphis (1-1) will have had two weeks to think about what could have been in their 35-42 loss at UCLA. As expected the Bruins Heisman candidate Brett Hundley was too much for the Tigers, completing 33 of 44 attempts for 396 yards and 4 TD. After near upsets of UCF and Louisville a year ago, the Memphis 'close but no cigar' approach to games is becoming agonizing. Either way, a close game against a top tier FBS team lets Memphis know where they stand, something a 63-0 season opening win over Austin Peay did not. The Tigers own the nation's 8th highest scoring offense at 49 PPG.
