Colorado State brings their high-powered offensive attack into Alumni Stadium to face a BC team that is surging after a surprising week two home loss to Pittsburgh. The Eagles have rattled off an upset of then #9 USC and a 30 point win over Maine in back to back weeks and put their 5th ranked rushing offense to the test against the Rams' 11th rated passing attack.
Colorado State (2-1) QB Garrett Grayson has commanded the Rams' offense as a senior, tossing for 993 yards and 8TD against just 2 INT. The QB will throw some incompletions (58.9%) but that could be due to his penchant for the long ball, having completed pass of 55+ yards in 2 of 3 games. Grayson's 8.9 yards per attempt is 26th in the nation. CSU will be facing their toughest test of the season, traveling across the country for an early 12:30 ET start and having to go up against the nation's leading rusher for QB's in Tyler Murphy, who ranks 10th overall with 500 yards on the ground. Containing Murphy could prove quite the task for a Rams defense allowing 212 yards rushing per game.
Murphy has been an impressive dual-threat for B.C, running for 191 yards to lead the upset over U.S.C. There's little doubt the senior QB is a run-first signal caller as his passing numbers are just 43/83 (51.8%) for 491 yards with 3 TD to 5 INT. Still, combined with John Hilliman (241 yards), Myles Willis (208 yards) and a talented group of other frequent ball carriers the Eagles have put up 336 rushing yards per game. The BC defense has been a huge benefactor, allowing less than 20 PPG and ranked 11th in the nation.
Despite all the obvious statistical advantages, Boston College is less than a TD favorite against the Rams. The Eagle passing defense only gives up 174 YPG which could put Colorado State behind the 8-ball, especially while trying to stop Murphy and the BC ground attack. This game should be BC's to take, but apparently in a much closer battle than expected.
