On Saturday afternoon, the Patriot League contender Colgate Raiders will have a tall task when they visit the Ball State Cardinals in each team's first game of the 2014 season.
The Colgate Raiders were able to win three of their five games in the Patriot League last year and finished 4-8 overall. Dan Hunt, who was an assistant at Colgate for 19 years, was hired in the offseason to see if he can take them to the top of the Patriot League standings.
The top player returning for the Raiders in 2014 is safety Mike Armiento, who had 92 tackles, 2.5 sacks and six interceptions last season. Junior quarterback Dylan Finelli will step in to lead the offense, who will have a total of eight members of the starting unit returning this year.
Ball State exceeded expectations last year by going 7-1 in the MAC with a 10-3 overall record. One of their two regular season losses came against Northern Illinois, who were ranked 20th in the country at the time. The Cardinals went to the GoDaddy BOWL where they lost 23-20 to Arkansas State.
The Cardinals will bring back 12 starters from last year's team. Jahwan Edwards should once again star for the offense after rushing for 1,110 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2013. Linebacker Ben Ingle, who led the team with 116 tackles last year, will lead the defensive unit.
